What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Search engine optimisation, or SEO for short, is a phrase that you hear a lot when talking about websites and the internet, but what exactly is it? It is the aim of many business owners to be returned top in the search engine results for a specific phrase or word associated with their business sector.

Optimisation is the way these first page search engine results are achieved. It is the work involved in optimising your website in such a way that it will be highly ranked by search engines.

Which Search Engines Do You Optimise For?

The main search engine to optimise for is of course Google. Google search accounts for the majority of search engine queries performed worldwide every day. While there are subtle differences in the optimisation techniques for Google when compared to other search engines, many are common and the basic principles apply across the board. While we will primarily target first page Google results, others such as Yahoo, Bing and AltaVista will quickly follow.

Natural Search vs Sponsored Search

When looking at any page of search engine results you will generally see two types; sponsored links that are typically returned at the top and right hand side of the search results page, which you have to pay for, and the natural results that are free and make up the main bulk of the page. These first page natural results are difficult to attain and are highly coveted for obvious reasons. This is where professional assistance is needed.

Sponsored links are an integral part of any online marketing campaign, but depending on the phrase you want to be the top result for it can get very expensive. The natural search results start to look very attractive when you are paying thousands of pounds per month for a pay per click campaign, and this is where optimisation really comes into its own and pays dividends. We recommend the use of both a pay per click and a natural search campaign for optimal coverage, but if you have limited budget to go with the natural search only.

Ongoing Optimisation

Search engine optimisation is an ongoing process. First page results can take a long time to achieve, and the work does not stop there. With the competition constantly vying for the top spot in a constantly changing landscape, there is a lot of work involved in maintaining that position once it has been achieved. We will ensure that your search engine rankings and position are maintained under a low cost monthly contract.

SEO Tip Of The Week

Be Patient - Good Results Take Time.

Search engine optimisation should not be rushed. If you want an instant fix to get to the top of Google then sponsored links are probably the best solution.

It may not take that long to do the on-page optimisation for your website. Once you have good written content, well structured and compliant markup, and well written meta data you will want to start seeing some results!

However, after the initial flurry of work you will need some patience. The search engines will need to crawl your website again, and discover the new and improved version. If your website is brand new then Google may not know it exists yet, so you'll need to get busy promoting the website and gaining some inbound links that Google can follow to find you.

Even then you may have to wait a couple of weeks before anything happens. Don't expect too much, too quickly - but don't give up either. With time, the right results will come. Don't make the mistake of trying to force things too quickly.

Avoid Keyword Stuffing

Many newcomers to SEO quickly realise that it is important to include keywords in their webpages that they would like to be found in the search engines for. They would be absolutely correct, but care is needed when implementing a keyword strategy.

You should include keywords in the right parts of your webpage, such as the title tag, headings and within written paragraphs. A common mistake is to include far too many occurrences of a keyword, and fall foul of what is termed keyword stuffing.

A good measure of how many times a keyword appears on a page is something called keyword density. There are many free tools available online to measure keyword density, so make use of these and ensure your density is not too high.

Write Good Content

Optimisation is not just about the technical aspects. The search engines will like to see a website which is regularly updated with good new content.

Content is textual, imagery, videos, new pages, articles or blog posts. Whatever you are talking about, selling, or saying make sure that you add new information regularly and in a well structured manner.

When the search engines next crawl and index your website, they will find new material and know that the site is regularly updated and not moth-balled.
